I'm going to apply for the ILR 10 year route, my visa is due to expire on the 30th of September, when should I apply?

My date of first entry is 31/8 or 1/9 in 2004 (can't remember which) but I'm not basing it on that since I have been out the UK for quite some time in the first few years. What do you suggest? Thanks

Any time within 28 days before your visa expires then, by post or in person.

You can actually apply at any time once you meet the requirements, so you could apply now if your absences are within the limit.
