If you think about it, not just BRP, but passport and driving license all have to be renewed after 10 years or just before it.

As it is an ILR, if the BRP has expired and not re-newed immediately, does that invalidate the ILR even if the resident has not left the UK?

No it does not. You simply apply for a new BRP card.

Current cost is £56 (postal). Obviously not required if a person applies for citizenship.

Why is it unfair? Is it unfair that you have to renew your passport every 10 years or your drivers licence? No it is not because people features change as they get older, biometric documents need to be updated to remain secure etc.

£56 is unfair, driver’s licence is still £21 something.

Whereas a passport renewal is currently £72.50

£56 is neglible if you calculate the total cost to get ILR ! In most cases its easily more than £10K +
ILR stamp on my new passport, without applying for a BRP?

Perhaps only if you are outside the UK and they don't give you a
thirty-day vignette?
I
suspect that they want every non-British person to eventually carry a
BRP?
