ILR pending, needs passport

Dear Gurus,
1. A friend’s ILR is still pending with the HO. He needs his passport urgently to obtain VISA to another country. Please how can he go about this? He has a small window to obtain this VISA. Please the expert here should kindly suggest.
2. Can he ask for passport and then submit back to HO after obtaining his VISA.

1. how long can the passport remain with him before returning back to HO?
2 Where can he update his address on HO Website?

If he requests his passport back for the purposes of travel, then they would consider his ILR application as
withdrawn.

It is not for the purpose of travelling.
He needs a job etc.

https://www.gov.uk/change-circumstances-visa-brp to report change of address.
I don't think there is a specified time in which he needs to return the passport (not sure but it will probably be clear when you go through the application or in the response from HO) but the ILR processing will essentially be on hold until the passport is returned.
