Dependant not in Uk gor 5 years

Thank you in advance for any help.
My partner is applying for ILR after completing the 5 year partner route. There should be no problem in her getting ILR
Her son arrived in the UK 4 years ago and has reached the age of 18.
Does he go hand in hand with his mum and will qualify because she qualifies or does he have to be here for 5 years as well.
He has a dependant leave to remain visa which expires the same day as his mums partner visa
He is not living an independant life.
