ILR application question about travel history: tourist visa refused

I had a tourist visa refused for Australia some years ago. In the ILR application, there is a question about whether you've been refused a visa for any country other than the UK and to provide details.
I have a reference number for the application.
My question is, does this count as the type of "immigration problem" they care about? (I understand that it may not be the best question to ask but I just want peace of mind).
Another question is, what details would they want to know?
The story in a nutshell:
I applied for a tourist visa, the Australians got back to me when I was on holiday many months later I'd even forgotten about the application, and couldn't provide the information they asked of me (I had no internet connection or my documents). I got back home but they had already refused and they said the decision was final and there was nothing I could do.
Does the Home Office need to hear this story?
Does this affect my ILR application negatively or at all?
Anyone had to apply with a similar story? If so, what are you supposed to provide?
Thanks in advance.
