Ancestry - ILR birth certificates query

Hi there,
I am applying for Indefinite Leave To Remain in the UK after entering the Country with my UK Ancestry visa in 2014.
I have been asked to provide evidence that one of my Grandparents was born in the UK. 'The evidence must be formal documents such as a full birth certificate for (MY) parents and grandparent'.
I would like to know if this needs to be an original or notarised copy. At the moment I only have photocopies availabe.
At the bottom of the required documents page of the application it states;
'Providing your documents:
You must provide your documents after you submit your application, these can be originals or copies. Any passports provided must be originals.'
I'm getting conflicting information online (and on the phone with Home Office). A work friend of mine who went through the same process (ILR from UK ancestry and also from NZ) said he didn't provide these at all for his ILR application!
I can acquire original/certified birth certs for my Grandparents and Father, however it won't be cheap and is a bit of a hassle air mailing from the other side of the world.
Thanks for your help!
