ILR & Broken Residence rule

When I very first came to the UK I didn't really think about ILR (Long Residence) and came and went as I pleased.
I know that there is a rule that if you spend more than 6 months outside of the UK at any one time, your Continuous residence has been broken and you must start again.
I will be eligible next year but I am just wondering if they make any exceptions to this rule of 6 months? Like for example family, children etc or on I was outside of UK for 6 months and 3 DAYS!!!

please give some more details, visa catagory? gap dates? first entry ? etc etc....

Way back in 1999, I went back home for 6 months and 3 days, so technically I know that this means my long residence has been broken but I was wondering if they allow any exceptions to this rule. I have been a student for the entire period.
If this is allowed it will allow me to get ILR right now as supposed to next year.

Still not cleared about your gaps, any way if you was out for more than 6 months in one go, then you have to explain reason that why you was out for this period and if you was out for just holidays and no reason , so then it can be problem for you to get ILR.
And if your gap was in first year at the start, then you need to cover that gap (mean 6 months) before applying your ILR.
