ILR Status whilst working in Guernsey

I am considering taking a post as a nurse, in Guernsey. My aim is to relocate to the U.K. permanently and am told from a reliable source, several overseas nurses have gained ILR status whilst working in Guernsey- i.e. nearing the end of their tenure, they applied for and were granted ILR status. The confusion for me is, as I'm reading the UKBA rules one must live 5 yrs continuous within the U.K. to apply for ILR status. The work permits for overseas nurses on Guernsey are for 4 yrs total. Not 5 yrs. I can't find out how these nurses were able to be successful in gaining ILR on a work permit whilst working in Guernsey? (I'm an RN from the U.S.) I will not waste my time/money working in Guernsey, with the (false)hopes that I,too, can apply for/gain ILR status if it just isn't so. The current U.K. Immigration/work restrictions are difficult enough as is... I wish I could locate these nurses and ask them how this was done. I would be grateful for assurance in advice.
