Continuous residence for the purpose of ILR

A friend of mine has been on HSMP since Sep. 2007 and employed ever since as a medical doctor.
During 2011 he has been on unpaid leave for 5 months to look after his terminally ill mother who passed away a coupe of months ago.
Has his continuous residence been broken?
Can this time be disregarded on discretion/compassionate grounds?

Many thanks for your help,

Meha

Should do, there is always room for exceptions. Might need some evidence though but should be ok.
