Ilr under 14 year rule

Hi guys,
I have a question for those that have successfully been granted ILR under the 14 year rule, as I understand it in most cases the applicants have either got an expired passport or have none at all. In this case how does the UKBA give the ILR, do they give you a new ID or is it in a form of a letter? Because I am sure they can not stamp the iLR in an expired passport.
Thanks for your insight.
