been on different categories - does that affect ILR

Hi- I entered UK on 31st March 2007 on an HSMP (which was valid from 31st jan 2007 to 31st jan 2009)
In 2008-09, my job required me to travel to europe fairly frequently and i couldn't afford to have my passport with the HO for 6 weeks or so. At that time Tier 1 applications were not given OTC at the PEO centres but work permits still were- so i switched to a work permit on 23rd Jan 2009
On 31st Jan 2009, i was made redundant with a 1 month notice period - till feb 28, 2009. On feb 16th 2009, i again applied for a tier 1, which i received on 27th march 2009, valid till 27th march 2012.
Now, i have been in UK from 31st March 2007 and so feel that 4 weeks before 31st march 2012, i should be able to apply for ILR -that is from 3rd march which is within my current leave
However, i have been told by people that since i switched to work permit in 2009, that my five years begin from 23rd Jan 2009 and not 31st March 2007. Is that correct?
