ILR - 28 day rule - help please!

Hi,
I had my HSMP visa granted on the 1st July 2007 and I entered the UK on the 20th July 2007.
I then got my Tier one extension in 2009 which expires on the 1st July 2012.
I am a little confused as to when I can apply for ILR - is it 28 days before my visa expires on the 1st July 2012 or 28 days before I have been here five years which will be the 20th July 2012?
Also when I first entered the UK I was just passing through on my way to go travelling - so I left that same day. Is this likely to effect my chances?
Thanks!

Could you please explain what you mean by "Also when I first entered the UK
I was just passing through on my way to go travelling - so I left that same day. Is this likely to effect my chances?"

11ollie7: under the modernised guidance to calculate 5 years residence for ILR, you are eligible to apply 28 days before the 5th anniversary of your Entry Clearance (as long as you enter within 90 days of getting EC which you did).
You got your EC on 1st July 2007; you are eligible to apply for ILR on or after Sunday, 3 June 2012. (as 3rd June falls on Sunday, the earliest you can apply is Monday, 4th June 2012).

If you are going to PEO, make sure to book an appointment 42 days in advance as this is when the slots become available. To book an appointment for Monday, 4th June 2012, you need to do it on Monday, 23 April 2012 (the night between 22nd & 23rd when the date changes).

Register yourself at UKBA’s site today and get yourself familiarised with the system as you wont have time to create an account and book appointment because the slots are booked very quickly at midnight.
