Hi,

my husband just received his COA but we were wondering whether he also needs to apply for a NI to be able to apply for jobs or will the COA be enough until he gets is EEA2?

He will definitely need to apply for NI before any LEGAL job.

If COA indicates he can accept employment, then yes, he can apply/accept to anything is offered.

Obtaining a National Insurance Number (NINo), will put him in the proper tax code and is very easy to get: http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/ni/intro/number.htm

When I called to book my appointment -I had the Family Permit and a few employment offers- the person on the line (a very nice lady) asked me a few "key" questions, sent me a form to fill out and return, and within a week I received a letter with my number.

You don't need a National Insurance Nr to start work. By law, not having one, does not forbid you from getting a job...but you should apply asap.

Totally Irrelevant, in my own Opinion.

Perhaps zubby, but applying for NI nr is NOT a prerequisite before getting a "legal" job...just as the HM Revenue & Customs website confirms "You can start work without one but you'll need to apply straightaway" http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/ni/intro/number.htm

I run a legal business. A french girl and a dutch guy had a trial shift at the club I run. Neither had NI nr and I hesitated to give them the job. I enquired. Both got the job and got paid after I was presented with a letter (and references) from Job Centre Plus stating that whoever has the right to work may commence employment and get paid, with or without a NI nr. It is imperative though that one applies as soon as possible. It now takes between 4-8 weeks or so to be issued one.

well we called the job center yesterday and asked about it. The guy on the other like as soon as we mentioned COA he knew exactly what I was talking about and gave my husband an appointment to get his NI for next week.
