EEA2 - Return of Documents request - file format query.

Sorry if its a bit of a computer question, but I'm unsure of the file format I sent.
I downloaded the form from the UKBA site, but it opened to reveal a mess of characters, that made no sense at all.
I presume it's because I don't have Microsoft Word on my laptop.
Anyway, after messing around converting with Google Docs, and then an online converter from docx to doc, I think I sent it at last, but it went as .docx format.

UKBA web-site says: "You are advised to email a Word document of the application"
And, according to the actual form, it says: "Please attach this form (in Word format only) "

I have read that some people have had their requests returned due to them sending in the wrong format, so I'm just asking if the docx format will do the job.

Any simplest writing on a page/email along with reference number for the return of documents usually passport serve the purpose.

I thought the only way of requesting back documents was now by using this specific form, attached to an email?
