We returned from UK to Nederland yesterday by ferry using the Dover-Calais route.
I was surprised to see that there was NOBODY doing immigration checks at Calais!
All the booths were practically empty and everyone just drove through. Wierd...

Not a surprise at all. Unlike UKBA, French immigration don't work 24/7. It seems they don't like the early morning / night shifts. With such a long border (even within Shengen), they are less concerned with immigration from the UK. I never heard about illegal immigrants camps in the UK trying to cross to France. The traffic is always from Frace to the UK.
