EEA2 Request Passport Back Questions

Hi everyone, I applied EEA2 as a EEAspouse on the 5th of January 2016. My COA arrived in February. I have not had any ID since then, i couldn't get my drivers license nor open bank accounts.I saw on other posts here that request your passport back can also check your application status ( your passport will not be be returned if your application is declined). Does anyone know if this is true or not? I have been struggling about if I should request my passport back or not lately. It has been almost 5 months since I sent in my application, I saw a lot people request their passports back fairly soon after apply and I felt I have given enough time for them to take my information, I think I should request my passport back because I am in great need of my ID to do other things . Any suggestions in terms of my situation?

Don't sweat it.
If you really need it then ask for it back. If you strike lucky it may be returned reasonably quickly.
