Working as a foreign student and NINo

I am in the UK as a Tier 4 Student; I can work for 20 hours a week during term time. I don't have a National Insurance Number as of yet. My university offered me a very small administrative job; 3 days this month (about 12 hours in total) and about 18-20 hours in December in total (2-3 days as well).
I've called to book an appointment to get a National Insurance Number today (as I just found about the job offer a couple of days ago), and the earliest date I got was 4th November - obviously, way after my first few days of work. Is that okay (I believe you don't need the NINo for work up to 28 days?), and do I need to get the number/go to the interview after all, considering I will be working for so little? I've heard about some kind of temporary NINo employers could give. Could someone clarify this for me?
