Child switch

Hello everyone,

I’d appreciate some advice on my family’s immigration situation — it’s a bit complex, and I’d like to be sure I’m planning things correctly for my child’s ILR eligibility.

Here’s our timeline:
• I first entered the UK in June 2018 on a Student visa.
• My wife and son joined me in January 2019 as dependants.
• In May 2021, my wife switched to a Skilled Worker visa, and my son and I switched to her as dependants.
• In January 2023, I switched to a Global Talent Visa (main applicant).
• My wife switched to become my GTV dependant in April 2024, but my son didn’t switch — he’s still on the Skilled Worker dependant visa that expires in May 2026.

I’m on the 3-year ILR route under Global Talent, so I expect to apply for ILR around December 2025.
My wife will extend then as a GTV dependant, so she’ll be eligible around December 2028.

My son entered the UK in January 2019, so he’ll reach 10 years of continuous lawful residence in December 2028.

Would it be better or safer to switch him earlier to a GTV dependant visa now, before my ILR in 2025? Or it is fine to switch him after me getting my ILR? I am trying to be lawful while maintaining the cost to reasonable levels.

Any insight from people who’ve gone through a similar mixed-route situation (dependant > GTV > 10-year ILR) would be hugely appreciated.

Thanks in advance for your help!

Best regards,
