Substance misuse jobs? marketing jobs? Advice on either one.

Post by MissIntrigued » Tue Mar 11, 2008 2:39 pm

Hi there

Trying to get an idea on what kind of job and salary I might be able to get if I come on HSMP/Tier 1.

I work as a substance misuse case worker right now. In the states I get about the equivalent of GBP 25-26K. Can I survive on this in London, and does anyone know about this hiring scene in London? Are there alot of places? Hospitals , etc?

I am not necessarily keen to stay in this job, mind you. I am more than willing and able to try something new. I have a Bachelor's in psychology which could be applicable wherever, and Im an intelligent and motivated person. have some interest in marketing or editorial work, I just don't have the experience on my resume. I have some MINOR experience in a past job that I can work to sound somewhat relevant to marketing if I try hard enough to word it the right way, but its minimal. Most of my experience is healthcare/mental health etc, but not at a graduate degree level, I only have a Bachelor's degree.

I guess my other question is, do I even have a chance to snag a job outside of my current field in which I'll have a salary I can live off it without starving and being in a crap neighborhood?

And, I would be applying from outside UK at first....is this totally impossible? I can fly to the UK for possibly three weeks, tops, for interviews and etc. I am somewhat worried that when they see my resume with an American address and phone number, that they wont even bother to look further. Would it make sense for me to put down a London address? I can use my friend's address, and I have a London prepaid mobile, but it doesn't work here in New York unfortunately....

Any tips on applying for work outside of the UK would be helpful. Thanks

Do you qualify under HSMP?

You might be able to get extra points for an MBA, which is something that will not be available under Tier 1.

In a few months ("sometime during the summer"), nobody will be able to use HSMP, they will have to qualify under Tier 1 (or some other Tier).

Yes, you have many chances. But, there is not enough info in your post to advise you. Try the links I posted above to begin understanding what qualifications are important for you to evaluate your chances.

No. Several hundred thousand people do it every year.

Use the internet and begin developing a search strategy that emphasizes your best qualities.

Get the HSMP if you can. It will be good for 2 years, when you will have to 'renew' it by getting an extension for "Leave to Remain" under Tier 1 rules. With these visas, you can take any job or leave any job as you wish.

So get a job at the beginning in your current field at the highest pay you can find, then you can search for other options as you begin to acclimate to the new culture.

Also, keep an open mind about location. London is REALLY expensive, even by New York standards.
