adding name to bank account

Post by MWill » Fri Jul 13, 2012 1:12 pm

I'm probably way overthinking this, but ... we've been thinking for a while about adding my wife's name to my bank account, and she applies for ILR in a few months time.

It wouldn't be a problem if, part-way through the 3 months' bank statements we provide for maintenance, her name starts appearing on the statements as well as mine? It would clearly have the same account numbers, etc. Like I said - probably way overthinking this and worrying about nothing!

I think it might be a criminal offence punishable with 2 years imprisonment.

Thousands of people are sent to prison every year in UK because their partner's name suddenly starts to appear on the bank statements.

Where did you get this information?

Adding your partner to your bank account is basically arranging the account to be JOINT instead of a SINGLE account (there is nothing illegal about it). This is a facility provided by the banks/building societies for families to manage finances together from one pot.

My barber told me that his other customer's neighbour's newphew's friend was sent to prison because suddenly his wife's name started to appear on his bank statements.

Hang on a second here!

Having a joint account with a bank is punishable ???

There must something else causing the criminal offence not a joint account in a bank!
