Which visa to change from spouse visa

Hi
My friend came to uk as student, then got married and changed to spouse visa - the marriage has broken down and he is now nearing end of spouse 2 year visa. What category can he switch to without having to leave the UK? can her apply as student again?

Does s(he) have any children in the UK? How long have they been in the UK?

He has no children from the marriage. He was a student for 3 years, then 2 years post study work visa, then 2 years spouse visa.
