Entitled to British passport but can't prove parents married

Post by coolukgurl » Tue Jul 01, 2014 5:24 pm

Hello everyone!

I am in a pickle.

My father was born and raised in Glasgow, Scotland and served with the British Army for more than 20 years. He married my mother in Nairobi, Kenya in 1982. I was born in the USA in 1987. My half-siblings from my father's first marriage still live in England, as do all of my cousins on my Dad's side.

I am trying to apply for a British passport, but the supporting documents require a marriage certificate. I cannot obtain one from Kenya, and my mother, who has psychiatric problems will not relinquish her only copy although I've assured her it would be sent and returned via registered courier mail.

I don't know what to do. I wrote to the passport office and they simply said to get copies from the marriage office. But it's Kenya, and for some reason they cannot find the records.
The documents I can obtain to support my application are as follows: my birth certificate with my mother and father on it, my dad's birth and death certificate, my mom's birth certificate, the deed to my parent's house that was bought 3 months after i was born and is in both of their names. I can also show a copy of the living trust they set up together. Furthermore, my mom took my father's last name. I can also get signed affidavits from both sides of my family to testify that they were married for 31 years.

Will this work or will I be wasting my money?

Thanks!
