Can you Apply for Spousal Visa Within the UK Immediately after marriage?

Here is some background information on our situation:
I am a US Citizen about to marry a UK Citizen in the UK.
I have entered the country on a Fiance Visa, which will expire on 24 May, and the wedding is on 29 March.

My question is that, when we get married, will we be able to apply for the spousal visa right away or are we required to wait a prescribed time period before applying?
This would be useful to know, as my fiance will have end up having to use some of the savings to show that he meets the income requirement, afterwards to go towards buying a house, so it will be useful to know the time frame of everything.
