Marriage to UK citizen - what if we later get divorced?

Post by reeniemac » Thu Sep 17, 2009 5:23 pm

Hi,
I achieved ILR yesterday, based on my Ancestry Visa and having spent 5 years in the UK.

I would like to get my naturalisation sorted now, because my husband's work may take us out of the country next year and we could be away for more than 2 years - which would cause problems returning if I only have ILR.

Because I am married to a British Citizen, I understand that I am now eligible to apply for Naturalisation under the 3 year rule.

My husband and I are very happily married and hope it will remain that way. However I am curious to know - if I base my naturalisation on being married to a UK citizen, instead of pursuing it on my own merits (ie. having to hold the ILR for one year before applying), does this mean that my citizenship could be revoked years later if we were to get divorced? Please note I am not planning a divorce and certainly hope this isn't the case, but I would like to know what my position is here.

Many thanks for any guidance that can be provided.
