my local GP refuses to register my wife

Post by Jersey » Thu Jan 26, 2012 4:12 pm

I'm EU and my non-EU came recently with her EEA family permit to live and work in the UK. My local GP is refusing to register on the grounds she doesn't have 'residence card'.

I already took it to PCT , but they are useless and backing the manager of practice. I explained them that they are violating (whether they know or not) EU laws by not letting her to be registered.

According to my knowledge, a spouse of an EU citizen has a right to live, work and of course register at a local GP.

Who can I complain to?

Sure will do. Is there any other body apart from the PCT in the NHS to which I can complain to?

why not approach another GP practice in the first instance. A GP practice does not have to accept a patient . If the other practice will not accept you, you can then request that you are allocated a GP. In the meantime ask your own GP to advise of drop in clinics for those without a GP . In the old days you could complain to the CHC not sure what it is called now. MP will pass your complaint on too .

Send in writing the request to join Gp surgery. as they are refusing ask them to give it in writing the reason why they r refusing.

i suspect when it comes to writing they'll be more responsible and careful.

Thanks guys. It took the PCT 3 days but in the end the GP called to apologise and said that my wife will be registered. Happy Ending :-)

For future reference to others in the same position. there is now law that doctors have to ask for visa or passports. They only need and ID card and proof of address if you are in need of help always speak to the practice manager, the GP has discretion of who to register and the hippocratic oath means that health should not be denied to those in need.
