Born in US in 92 to UK father. Can I apply as UK citizen?

Hi,

I was born on September 27th, 1992 (now age 22). My father is a UK citizen (born in the UK to UK parents). My mother is American, but they were married at the time of my birth (and still are). From my internet research, I have seen that if I was under 18 I would be entitled to UK citizenship.

Is this still the case now that I am 22?

So do I need to "register" for my citizenship or just apply for a British passport?

Should I go to the British consulate in my city tomorrow to get started on this?

You don't need to register if you are already British. You can just apply for passport at your nearest UK consulate.

To reiterate, my father has never registered me as a British citizen. I understand that I'm British by descent, but it just surprises me that it's that simple. Does this mean I could travel to the UK on my US passport and live/work there indefinitely w/o a visa?


To apply for my British passport, all the documentation I'll need is:
passport #s for my father/mother and their places/dates of birth.
2 identical photos of myself
My US passport
My full birth certificate
Father’s full birth certificate (he's the UK citizen)
Marriage certificate to mother

Being British by decent means you cannot pass citizenship to your children if they born abroad.
When you are British(even by decent) you don't need to register.

I believe you can travel to UK freely on you US passport even if you are not British. Seniors can confirm it. But if that is not the case, I believe you need to apply for right to abode.

For documents, best thing would be to pick up the application form which will include the guide which will tell you the supporting documents you need.

You could in theory do this, although at some point you would have to prove that you indeed have the right to work by some means (a passport). Technically, all British citizens who to enter the UK are required to show their passport, a right of abode, or other similar proof that they are citizens and can enter the country as such.
