Child Born outside UK

Post by mkaleem » Mon Jul 13, 2015 4:18 pm

My wife and I got the British citizenship last year and living in the UK. We had our baby in 2013 who is also British citizen. We are now going to have our 2nd child in December 2015 and we are planning to have the baby in Pakistan, because we get more family support to look after my two year old child during labor.

I just want to confirm if we can have our 2nd child outside UK? Would it be a difficult process to get the passport of our baby in Pakistan? Some one suggested me to apply for urgent travel document to bring the child back to UK an than apply for the passport.

Please advise

Process could be difficult. Please click here for another such case.

What my friends do, is bring one mother-in-law in UK for a short time instead  but do click above link and read through. Good luck.
Being British is a state of mind.

Your child, if born in Pakistan, will automatically be a dual British Pakistani citizen.

Be aware that as your child will be a British citizen by descent (if born outside the UK), their children will not be British if they are born outside the UK.

Your child is eligible for a British passport as a British citizen, but it can take about six months outside the UK.

Your child is ineligible for an Emergency Travel Document because it requires the applicant (your child) to have had a passport at some time in the past.
You usually can’t get an emergency travel document if you’ve never had a British passport
As regards fwd079's suggestion

I suggest getting both putative grandmothers to the UK. It would be a much more *dynamic* and entertaining situation at home

Thanks Guys... The only problem I have that both grandmothers are now old and can't bear the cold weather in December here......

The comments about the grandmothers was in a light-hearted vein. You could look at sponsoring one of the sisters (either her or yours) rather than the grandmothers.

But on a serious note, if the child is born abroad, assume that the mother and child will not be able to return to the UK for six months to a year and plan accordingly. If she needs to be back earlier, it would be better to have the birth in the UK.
