BRP Collection

Post by AntonioS » Wed Aug 05, 2015 12:42 pm

Hi,

I am hoping someone here is able to help me.. Basically, I have successfully applied for my Tier 4 Student Visa, and have selected my BRP collection location, however I am unsure of when I can collect it. I understand that ordinarily the BRP should be collected within 10 days of arrival, however I arrived in the UK before my 30 day vignette is valid.
I.e. My 30 day vignette is valid from the 21st of August and I arrived on the 30th of July.

Does this mean I need to collect it within 10 days of the 30th of July? Or will it only be issued after the 21st of August and then I would need to collect it within 10 days of that?

Also, if the BRP is only available for collection after the 21st of August, would I need to leave and re-enter the UK after the 21st in order for it to be issued?

Thanks!
Anthony

On what basis have you entered the UK before your visa start date??

Your new Tier 4 visa will need to be activated on arrival in the UK, they usually stamp your entry date on your actual visa and you collect your BRP date within 10 days of arrival on this Tier 4 visa.

Thanks for the reply - I've entered the UK before the visa start date to travel and set up my accommodation for the year, the stamp I was given just says "Leave to enter for 6 months.. etc" and is on the page next to my 30 day vignette. There is an entry date stamped, but it is not on the visa.

Then you may well have a problem as it appears you've been given restricted entry as a visitor. You're not going to be able to activate your Tier 4 visa as you're already here...which also means you won't be able to collect your BRP. Without activation on UK entry your vignette will expire within the 30 days and you'll have to re-apply.

Fortunately I was able to find an email address on the Biometric Residence Permit page (https://www.gov.uk/biometric-residence- ... ot-arrived). I contacted them explaining the situation and they informed me of the date that my BRP will be available for collection and the location at which I can collect it (same as specified in the visa application).

So for any future readers that have a similar issue to me, or if your BRP hasn't arrived, follow the link and email the address listed there on the page. I had a response within an hour :)

Yes but did you tell them in the email that you've entered the UK as a visitor? You can't just swap to using the BRP. You are currently here as a visitor and therefore cannot work or study. You need to leave the uk and re enter using your tier 4 vignette once it is valid. If in doubt speak to the international student advisor at your institution.

Greenie is absolutely right. The Post Office (or alternate collection location, eg your University) will not issue a Tier 4 BRP to someone who is here as a visitor. Nor can you enrol on your course as a visitor. You need to finish your visit, leave, then come back as a student within the validity of your vignette.
