Quickest way for a professional family to get to Canada?

Post by loxley » Tue Jan 08, 2008 12:37 am

My family and I are wanting to move to Canada with the intention that my my wife and I work (teacher and public sector manager). We seem to have the correct number of points using the skilled worker calculator but were a bit dismayed to see that the average wait is around 3 or 4 years!?!

We just wondered if there is a quicker way to get into Canada using some form of temporary work permit or sponsorship by friends?

If not then we might as well settle in for a long wait...

Why not go to Australia instead, if eligible to emigrate there?

We want to go to Canada because of the lifestyle, climate and friends...also the snow is a big factor.

Maybe but what you "want" needs to be subordinate to what is possible.

There may be a way to get into Canada more quickly if you can get a work permit. But you'd need to be eligible for teacher registration in the province, and might need to be prepared to live away from the major cities. Also, your situation on a work permit is quite vulnerable if you get sick, lose your job etc.

Crikey, when did my mother become a moderator?

Actually, if we were going on what we need then we would stay here in England. The whole idea of going to Canada is because we want these other things...

Sounds like it might just mean a long wait. :(

what other things or changes you would expect in canada which is in England? Canada and Oz both are full of Brits, nothing different from England in that aspect... They are in the process of making other part of the world like England...So what is going to be different?

OK, I really didn't want this to turn into an argument/debate so...

The main reasons why we want to move are:

- friends that live over there
- a unquantifiable long term love affair with Canada
- Whistler on our doorstep (for snow sports)
- the culture of Canada suits us
- it's not too hot in summer
- there are no fly infestations (compared to Australia)
- we like North America.

Your best bet for faster immigration is to be sponsored by an employer, or provincially sponsored immigration.. The skilled immigration program has long wait times, as you noticed.

If you check out the Canada immigration website - http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/index.asp - you can find out about provincially sponsored immigration programs. They are often based upon specific job needs, so they can be quite difficult, but you may get lucky. This program would require you to stay within a certain area for a period of time before you could move anywhere in Canada.

Like in other countries, sponsored employment can be difficult to find. This is especially true if you are not already living there, since it's harder to network, make contact, etc.

Even with the wait times, if you qualify, the best option may still be skilled migration. You get permanent residence immediately, and you have the ability to live anywhere in Canada. If you're willing to wait, get your application in now. You can always decide against it later when your name comes up. They've streamlined the application process from the UK, so you don't have to provide as much documentation up front. You will need to only provide it when your name has been selected.

Hope that helped.. Good luck!

.

Localized areas in Canada can provide fast-track immigration.

This means that if you can get a provincial government or a city/regional government or a business to sponsor your work permit based upon a critical & recognized need for certain skills, it is possible to get into Canada within a "few" or a dozen weeks or so.

However, this may limit your choices as to which city you want to move.

Also look into getting all of your degrees & certifications recognized by Canada.

Your basic strategy is to get a job offer (in your case, job offers for both of you) in an area (physically & professionally) where your skills are in shortage. Start designing your job searches toward professions and specific positions that fall into these categories.

.

Be careful about this assumption:

There are regions where biting flies make it nearly impossible to go outside during certain periods of the summer. Definitely research the area you are looking at if you want to avoid this problem.
