Trading on Ebay and Amazon

Post by Globe Trotter » Sat Nov 18, 2017 1:34 am

Hi,
I am on 200K Ent visa and my query is:
1- Apart from the business that I am currently doing, can I start selling some other things on ebay and amazon as well?

2- If yes, do I need to update my records on companies house mentioning the business that I am doing on these ecommerce sites? (for example fashion, health care etc.)

Many thanks

1 - Yes
2 - Not mandatory, up to you

Note:
A spokesman (HMRC)said: “Where people choose not to set the record straight, we conduct follow-up work. This includes investigations and prosecutions.
AND
"People who register their account as a “business seller” on websites such as eBay or Amazon are among the likely targets."

Many thanks for your guidance.

But if I do not update my business on companies house, then would it not be an issue with Home Office as I am indulging in a business that has not been registered on companies house?

What do you mean here by registering with Companies House ?? You do not need to register anything

The warning was from HMRC, they care you pay your taxes.
If you are selling a few odd pieces on ebay then not a big deal (though as a t1 ent, I would always be extra cautious, just declare the revenue), if you make it into a business you must pay taxes (and possibly VAT for larger revenue/business type)

You need to realise there are huge businesses who sell solely via amazon/ebay

Sorry Zimba for not making myself clear.

What I meant was "Do I need to update the nature of business (SIC) on Companies House website?
For example: 80100 - Private security activities. This is done when I plan to open a security services business.

Now If I sell multiple products like footwear as well as electronics on Amazon, do I need to update each and every category on companies house, e.g.
46520 - Wholesale of electronic and telecommunications equipment and parts,
46420 - Wholesale of clothing and footwear

I hope I was able to convey my query.

Many thanks.

Hi you have to write “ Retail sale via mail order houses or via Internet“ . This is include everything. Marketplace, website etc.

There is no requirement in the immigration rules that you should update the SIC codes. I am not sure if even any other requires it. If your main business has changed, it makes sense to update it - it can be done online, it does not cost anything, it can changed over and over again. So far, in all the interviews that others have shared here, I don't remember SIC codes being asked about at all.
So, bottom line, up to you

This is irrelevant to immigration rules. If your nature of business changes, you need to deal with companies house. Seek business advice from your accountant
