Spouse visa separation within 2 years of entering uk

Please bare with me while I'll try to explain whole situation.

Friend from USA and his wife of 9 years moved to UK and he is on spouse visa and is in uk under 2 years. Past 7 months marriage seems to be failing and he staring to look at way how he can stay when they separate. He is working at the moment but possibly won't be able to keep his job after divorce.
What choices chances does he has to stay and what visas can be apply for ? Will he need to leave uk to apply again to come back on different visas ?

No unfortunately no children that would be theirs together or in uk. She has children from previous marriage in states

Unless he satisfies the definition of parent for his wife’s children who are living in the UK and also satisfies the Family life as a parent of a child in the UK requirements.

Non of the children live in uk. All are in USA unfortunately

They going for holiday soon . Can he apply for working visas while there on holiday for 2 weeks and travel back as his spouse visas are still active ?

Just looking at all ways possible to not be dependant on spouse visas at the end

Probably lots of preparations and requirements to meet.

Two weeks may be too short a time to apply.

He is looking at working visas or any other visas really to allow him to stay including student visas.

He worked for Honda in USA I think as line manger with 15 people under him not sure if that may be of any help.

Marriage counselling will not work. But thank you for suggestion just not the way they want to go with.
