Not necessarily. At that time, Commonwealth citizens had more freedom to move within Commonwealth countries, not unlike the EU freedom of movement.
It is therefore possible that the father would have resided legally in the UK without acquiring British citizenship. And even if he did acquire British citizenship, he would have registered as a British citizen, rather than naturalised (which was reserved for non-Commonwealth citizens before 1983).
To the OP, do you have any documentation of your father having British citizenship (or CUKC citizenship before 1983)? Do you have proof of your father having resided in the UK for five continuous years?
Do you have a registration certificate for your father? The

General Register Office may be able to help, for a fee.
