Citizenship application - spouse has lost original birth certificate

Post by Aarushi73 » Mon May 27, 2019 10:40 am

I am a British citizen, and my spouse has just obtained ILR. He's been here over five years and has spent hardly any time overseas, so is now in a position to apply for British citizenship. Unfortunately he has lost his original birth certificate somewhere along the line. However, he has a certified copy of his original birth certificate, and another certified copy of the translation of it into English. When he makes the citizenship application will these certified copies be sufficient, or will he definitely need the original birth certificate?

Also, is it possible to choose where you wish to attend the citizenship ceremony? We live in Derbyshire, but are much closer to Sheffield. They have citizenship ceremonies in Sheffield every week, but in Matlock (Derbyshire County Council) they only have them once every two months.

Many thanks in advance to the forum members for clarification.

There is no requirement to submit a birth certificate to apply for citizenship on form AN.

Yes, the form should give you an option to state a different council for the ceremony.
