Citizenship application with 6 month off for travelling

Post by papajones » Mon Aug 05, 2019 7:07 pm

Hi all!

I would like to pick your brains, if possible, about my citizenship application. As my story goes:
- EEU citizen (Polish) in a civil partnership with a Brit (since 2016)
- applying via 3 years route on-line
- got my settled status this year (but no permanent card)
- I meet all the criteria of language/life in the UK test (studied here/passed the test)
- between January-June 2018 I quit my job and backpacked NZ (still within 270 allowed days outside the country within 3 years period)

1. My main concern is about this 6 months travelling break, as I left my job to do that (re-applied afterwards). Will that be a problem? We had savings and backpacking insurance during the trip, but no comprehensive sickness insurance.

2. Do any breaks in employment need to be accounted for with documentation? Say, when I was changing jobs recently this year I took a month off???

3. Moreover, on the on-line application, I do not know how to answer the question about permanent residency? Is settled status the same thing?

Thank you,
PJ

The rules require you are not out of the country for more than 90 days in the last year. I think it is also required to be in the country 90 days per year every year, you may just fall out of the limit.

Hi!

Thanks for the reply, I will double-check that. In the last year, I have only been out of the country around 30 days, it was one year ago I went away for 6 months.

What about this rule of 90 days each year? I didn't find it in the guidelines. I have only seen less than 270 days in 3 years and less than 90 days in the last year only.

So just to clarify. If I apply for 3 years route, because of my civil partnership it will be counted as follows:

1. e.g. I apply on the 12th of Aug '19, so the period between 12.08.16-12.08.19 is my qualifying period.
2. In this period in the last 12 months, I couldn't have been abroad for more than 90 days, I was no more than 30 days
3. In the whole period of 3 years, I couldn't have been abroad for more than a total 270 days, and I was altogether 190 days (including 6 months in NZ and 30 days from last 12 months)
4. I had some time off between jobs (2 months in total), but that was in England and it will show in the employment history. I did not find any information about a few weeks between jobs is important.

If I wrong in my assumptions, please do correct me.

Also, does anybody know why the BC application requires 10 years of employment history? How can I remember? And again, do gaps in employment in between matter at all?

There is no such "90 days per year" requirement that a person must be in the UK to apply for citizenship.
