Have ILR in expired US passport. Do I need BLP if I want to be self employed?

Hello, situation as above. I have read the transfer visa information and it is clear that I cannot use it to prove to an employer that I have a right to work. However, I know I have a right to work and don't need the proof. Is it necessary if you are going to be self-employed?

No if you are working for yourself but yes if you will work for someone else.
