My brother had his Tier 1 renewed in July 2008 whereas his visa was valid till December 2008. He gave the reason that he wanted to travel abroad in september for few weeks and wanted to make sure that he has a valid visa. hope this helps

There is no clear guidance re how much in advance of the expiry of the current leave can a person apply for extension under Tier-1. However, HO encourages applicants to apply around 5 weeks before the expiry of current leave. People have got extensions much before that.
