e-visa without surrender of Indian Passport

Post by atto_lost » Wed Jul 17, 2024 4:58 pm

I got UK passport in Jan-2024. There was huge personal crisis and as a result i did not get time to surrender and renounce Indian passport

I am travelling to India on August 2024. I will use UK passport for Travel. I need valid Indian passport for identification purposes in India and i dont use it for travel.

I am planning to apply e-visa today, will it be rejected ? or is it ok ? I am planning to come back to UK in 2 months and surrender, renounce and apply for OCI.

Can anyone please guide?

No issues in applying for e-visa without surrender of indian passport. You can surrender your passport any time within 3 years without incurring a fine. You can even do it in India for just INR 500.

But you arent allowed to travel on it even once after acquiring the new passport.

Technically the passport is invalid as you lose your citizenship automatically so I am not sure about the validity of using it for identification even though this may never be checked

Thanks a lot for the response. I am not planning to travel at all with my Indian passport. Now i am filling my e-visa form, there is a section where it says do you have any active passports ? should i fill my indian passport details or no. Technically, my passport becomes invalid after i get UK passport so i assume the answer is "NO" but waiting for your answer

I am in a similar situation. Can you please let me know, what is the process to surrender the indian passport and Renunciation of citizenship in India ?

I'm looking for the responce to this post too.

My wife just applied for British passport and we need to travel to India in a month time.

Wondering if we can get eVisa without
1. surrendering indian passport
2. Renouncing indian citizenship ?

Appreciate your responce in this matter.
Best regards

Hi @sathyauk

If my wife travels to India on British passport with eVisa.
Would it have any detrimental effect to
Renunciation & surrender of indian paper process later on when it's done after coming back to the UK?

Also, would it affect OCI process too?

Would it be better option to get apply for RC and Surrender then get e-Visa to India?

Best regards.

There is no requirement to apply SC and RC for getting evisa. No issues in applying for e-visa without surrender of indian passport. You can surrender your passport any time within 3 years without incurring a fine. I would recommend to Surrender your passport and apply for RC later. Indian immigration counters will not ask for SC or RC documents

It can be done, if you look at all the answers. But while filling up evisa form they are asking about any valid passports, should we mention about our Indian passport is the question, I am waiting for an answer to that question

For everyone's benefit

I havent surrendered or renounciated my Indian citizenship. However i cease to become indian citizen the moment i receive UK citizenship and cannot use indian passport for travel after grace period of 3 months.

I have applied for e-visa for India nd got it within 12 hours for 1 year. Once i comeback to UK i shall apply for OCI by surrendering passport and then renouncing the citizenship.

I will not use my indian passport for travelling as it is illegal (You need to pay penalty while surrendering) and shall not use it for any official purposes. It is just because of time squeezing i had it on my end could not surrender
I shall be using British Passport for travel purposes.

any questions welcome

Hi Otto,
What did you write in the section 'have you visited India before' where it asks for visa details?
