I have now acquired all documents neccesary for submitting my application.

but I wonder if anyone can help clear something up for me.

The application asks for my grandfathers (the one who I'm basing my application off of) marital status...

However, he is deceased.

I know he was married to my grandmother when my mother was born, but on his death they were not together anymore. I'm unsure whether they had divorced or not because his death certificate does not state his marital status. The only box I can see relating to marriage on the death certificate is the box that says
"Maiden Surname of woman who has married" which just has just been left blank.

Which option would I select in this scenario?

I would just select Married. As long as you have his birth, marriage and death certificates just leave it at that.

Now that you have everything my advice is to have someone else go through it all. Make sure everything is witnessed properly. Put application # on back of the two witnessed photos too.
Good Luck!

I think divorce was only legalised in Ireland in 1996

Is the wait for the passport really that long?! I sent off for mine yesterday and was hoping to have everything back by mid March as I’m planning on going away around then. The first time passports estimated turn around times were showing about 20 working days when I applied.

Here's a very recent applicant in the passport forum's experience

2 January 2025: Applied
7 January 2025: Email seeking copy of PSC
7 January 2025: Posted copy of PSC
10 January 2025: Passport book arrived

Exceptionally brilliant service.

Hi all,

Haven't been able to get any information out of the FBR but if anyone is able to clarify that would be great.

My application was received in Apr '24 and my brother's in August '24. All the supporting documents for my mother and Grandfather were attached to my application so when my brother sent his application, we advised them to use these documents for my brother's application to which they agreed.

In November, I received an additional request for my Grandfather's death certificate (was already with my application) to which I sent another certified copy. Prior to sending this, my brother was approved without any request for additional information (meaning that he was approved with the original document) and I also had a family member approved with identical documents 18-months ago. I haven't been able to get any reasoning for this from FBR which is incredibly frustrating.

Does anyone know whether there might be additional reasons for the hold up with my application?
Does anyone know the approximate delay to approval with a request for additional documents?

Thanks in advance!

I sent off for my passport straight away. So now everything is in Royal Mails hands for now, it took until Wed 15th Jan to get to Heathrow’s Worldwide distribution and has been there ever since, it’s now Sat 18th Jan, a week after posting. Anyone else ever had issues with RM? According to them it should take 3-4 business days and the envelope has my current British passport in so instead of getting two at this rate I’ll be having none

I’m a very impatient person so this is not the best situation to be in for a person like me

For those posting FROM the UK.

I had an odd issue with posting documents from the UK to Ireland for my Passport after FBR - it seems that Royal Mail (RM) give out wrong information, and do not flag documents as needing a customs declaration (a CN22) - this can cause Irish customs to reject the letter/packet.

I ended up having to call ecomm in Dublin and practically beg for them to manually review it - as I required the passport for some upcoming travel. They were able to do this (so big thumbs up to them) - but they did repeat the advice that ALL letters using a tracked service (like RM International Tracked and Signed) DO require a CN22 declaration - even just documents...

Safest option if sending anything to Ireland is to insist that the RM/Post Office always does a CN22.

Loads of folks having the same issue - much quicker and more reliable to hope on a flight to Dublin at the moment - my documents did not move for 11 days

Possibly the issue in this case was the fact that you put a passport in there which then makes a package thicker than a letter. and subject to customs. I asked the post office about this. when I sent my own passport application in and they said paper doesn't need a customs form. When you put a passport in, it makes it look like there's more than just paper in there. But as we're dealing with customs here. who knows at the end of the day, and you're properly safer putting in a customs form anyway, even for paper.

Update. Passport which was mailed from Ireland on January23, 2025 is still at ISC New York, NY facility. Yesterday I received back my US Passport and application passport papers I submitted. That was mailed from Ireland on January 29, 2025. Both envelopes mailed the exact same way. USPS told me yesterday it can take 45 days before they forward it. Crazy!
