Grandson of Dutch National - Can he get Dutch Passport?

Post by hrak1978 » Sat Oct 18, 2025 9:37 pm

Hi all,

My dad passed away but he was really sick from the last one year. His grandson and grand daughter born abroad but can they apply for Dutch passport as when they were born there grand father was Dutch citizen. I got all the documents to prove that to show the relationship. I haven't searched anything yet but this place is an encyclopedia of knowledge if anyone can shed some light on it?

Much appreciated.

Many thanks.

What nationality was the father (or mother) if not Dutch?

@alterhase58

Much appreciated for the reply.

So here is the history

My dad (Got first Dutch Passport in 1989) myself and my 2 brothers were in Pakistan. Only I travelled to UK in 2004 and got EU Family permit through my father in 2011 and subsequently got British Citizen.

My brother's kids (grand kids of my dad) all born in Pakistan still residing in Pakistan.

This seems to suggest the grandchildren would need to have a Dutch parent (who was Dutch at the time the children were born) to qualify. If that is the case they were automatically Dutch at birth. Otherwise they could qualify via 5 years residency in the Netherlands.

The grandchildren's relationship to their Dutch grandfather only seems to be relevant if citizenship was passed from grandparent to parent before the grandchildren were born.

You may be aware, but usually the Dutch require renunciation of dual citizenship to take up Dutch nationality (there are various exceptions - being born a dual citizen seems to be one - but this is the usual situation.)

@Vadrar

Much appreciated for the clarification. My sincere apologies for late reply I was not in UK just came back and was really busy.

My father sent application form and job related documents to my mum in 1999 and I remember that he told me many times he register the whole family in Netherlands but mum couldn't apply because she got sick badly and they never applied.

Can you advise if my father register us all in local council and if were on the system do you think if there are any chance? for the kids means my brothers can get Dutch Nationality?

Many thanks in advance.

So if I'm understanding correctly your father registered you, your brother and mother as residents in the Netherlands on the Personal Records Database in 1999 but you, your brother and mother never arrived or resided in the Netherlands? Unfortunately, I can't see how that would be helpful in relation to citizenship.

Your brother would have had to move to the Netherlands, reside for at least 5 years, then apply and receive citizenship. Just registering as resident but never arriving means your brother wasn't even resident, let alone made a citizen. It sounds like only your father met the qualifying criteria, and that is why he got citizenship.

Your brother's children would have to move to the Netherlands, reside for 5 years and apply themselves to have a shot at Dutch citizenship I'm afraid. As a side note, it there is discussion in the Netherlands about increasing the qualifying residency period to 10 years for citizenship (which is becoming more common in many EU countries.) So if the grandchildren wanted to seek citizenship they'd probably be better off starting soon in case they can become eligible before criteria is raised to 10 years. Sorry it is not better news.
