Drink driving DR10 & citizenship application

Post by marleyvo » Sat Feb 14, 2026 12:21 am

Hello everyone,

I hope you’re all well. I’m reaching out because I’m feeling a little anxious about my situation and would be very grateful for any advice or experiences you could share.

I was convicted of DR10 (drink-driving) in January 2022. I received a 14-month driving ban, completed a drink-driving awareness course, and had my license returned in March 2023. This is my only criminal conviction.

I have been living in the UK since 2015, and I have two British children and a British husband. I also work for the NHS. I have already passed my Life in the UK test.

I am now considering applying for British citizenship, but I’m worried about paying the application fee and being refused because of my past conviction, even though I’ve maintained a clean record since then and am fully integrated into life here.

I would be incredibly grateful if anyone has been in a similar situation and successfully obtained citizenship, or has advice on how best to strengthen an application in these circumstances. Any guidance, tips, or encouragement would be hugely appreciated.

Thank you so much in advance for taking the time to read and respond — I really value any help or insights you can share.

Hallo. Hope you managed to get some advice. my personal understanding from research as to the Home Ofice good character Your dr10.In February 2026, with a conviction from January 2022, you have already passed the critical 3-year threshold that typically triggers an automatic refusal.
Passed the 3-Year Rule: Home Office Good Character Guidance generally refuses applications if a non-custodial conviction (like a drink-driving ban and fine) occurred in the last 3 years. Since your conviction was over 4 years ago, you are now in a much stronger position.
Mandatory Disclosure: You must still declare the conviction. Failing to do so can be considered "deception," which often leads to a refusal and a 10-year ban on future applications.
Case-by-Case Assessment: Caseworkers now use a "balance of probabilities" to decide if you are of good character. They will weigh your 2022 offence against your positive contributions, such as your NHS service, your stable family life with British children, and your long residency since 2015.
Strengthen Your Application: Include a brief cover letter expressing remorse for the incident and highlighting your clean record since then. References from your employer or community can also help demonstrate your integrated character.
