referees

Post by sorrels_mo » Fri Apr 10, 2026 5:47 am

Hi everyone,

I’m applying for UK naturalisation and wanted to check if my referees are acceptable.

I have two referees:
• One is an IT engineer (British citizen)
• The other is a restaurant manager (also a British citizen)

Both have known me for more than 3 years and are not related to me.

Would these be acceptable for the application?

Thanks in advance.

Is either of them a "professional"? Holds a professional qualification from their institute/trade body (not a degree)?
Or in line with the list published by UKVI:

Thanks for your reply. I’m sorry, but I’m not sure what you mean by professional qualifications. She has a degree and has been working in the NHS for over six years as an IT engineer. The Home Documents state “an engineer (with professional qualifications)” does that mean relevant training for her job?

An engineer in this context is a Civil, mechanical or electrical Engineer who must be registered with their appropriate regulatory governing body to practice as an engineer. This is the professional qualification.

Thanks for the clarification. So she is not qualified, and I will look for someone else.

Another question: if the correct reference is not submitted, will the Home Office refuse the application, or will they ask to submit another correct reference?

If the referee provided is not suitable, the Home Office will normally contact the applicant to provide an alternative before making a decision.
