There are loads of answers for this question in the forum. Have a search and you will find.

I have seen some post in the forum saying that you can any time before 12 months of the expire of your visa.

In short, you can apply anytime before your leave expires. Search the forum and you will find many threads for it.

As per the guidance notes you are expected to apply 5 weeks before your HSMP LTR expires but i have seen on the forums people got away by applying long before 5 weeks time.

Guidance extract below:
It is important that applicants make an application for further leave to remain before his/her current leave expires. However applicants should, wherever possible, make their application no more than five weeks in advance of the expiry of his/her current leave.
