Net immigration to UK is down

Post by ashishashah » Thu Aug 27, 2009 2:45 pm

Border and Immigration Minister Phil Woolas said:

'The fall in net-migration is further proof that migrants come to the UK for short periods of time, work, contribute to the economy and then return home. Our new flexible points based system gives us greater control on those coming to work or study from outside Europe, ensuring that only those that Britain need can come.

What he fails to mention is that net immigration reduction is largely due to Eastern Europeans going back home due to the recession. It has been in the news recently on BBC, Telegraph, etc that this was the major cause for the fall. I don't believe non-EU workers or students are causing problems but ofcourse for political reasons this fact was not mentioned by Phil.
