Tier-1 VISA application while working in other company

Hi to all,
My good friend is on client-side in UK for an assignment in his company. Can he apply for the Tier-1 (General) VISA while on this assignment? Can it result in any issues with his employment with the company?

p.s. my friend is currently on Tier 2 visa i.e work permit

He can apply for Tier 1 General visa if he meets the requirement. As soon as he gets his Tier 1 General , his Tier 2 visa will not be valid any more and he would be under the obligation of informing his sponsor (employer).
