Death in the family...do I have any options?

Post by sugardog » Sat May 26, 2012 9:29 am

I nearly submitted my SET(M) application through a settlement checking service at Camden council last week, May 22nd, but I then heard there's been a death in the family.

I tried to book an appointment for premium same-day service, but none of the service centers had openings within 6 weeks. Not only would I miss the funeral, but my current permit would then be expired. A funeral date has not yet been set, but it will obviously be soon.

I plan to go back on Tuesday, May 29th to resubmit via Camden's settlement checking service. They told me they don't have any expediting options, not even for bereavement. The lawyer I spoke to said the same.

Am I out of luck or might someone on this list know something that could help me? It's hard enough to deal with a death in the family abroad, but being unable to be there with the family would be really depressing.

Thanks in advance.

Hi,

Can you apply for an Emergency passport? I believe that a death in the family qualifies for an emergency passport perhaps check with your Embassy?

Hope it works out; I applied March 1 and still waiting....

When is your current leave (as spouse or partner of settled person or British citizen) due to expire?

My current resident permit as a spouse will expire on June 16th.

Hadn't thought of an emergency passport. Will look into that.

So what is the problem? You may travel, return to UK before 16-June and then apply for SET(M) on/before 16-June.

How will emergency passport help ... if OP's current passport and BRP (if issued) is with UKBA? How will OP return to UK with only an emergency passport .. but with no vignette / BRP (proof of leave to enter/remain in the UK)?
