Cheapest area to live for a year.

This is an area for the discussion of matters related to issues about moving from one country to another. Examples could be about money transfer, moving and packing, validity of driving licence, etc..

It is not a general non-immigration, free-for-all area.

Cheapest area to live for a year.

Post by muck » Sat Nov 20, 2010 4:46 pm

I live in South Africa and all my kids live in the UK. We all have Finnish passports and my problem is this:
My wife and I want to retire next year and stay for one year in the UK but will only have a modest GBP2.5K PM income.
Where is the cheapest area to live on this income that has public transport.
I was thinking of Tunnbridge Wells or Margate.
Any ideas? I have read that Scotland is the cheapest.

I can't think of anywhere in the UK where you could possilby live on £2.5k for a year.
I am not, and cannot, offer legal advice to particular people. I can only discuss general areas of immigration law.

People should always consider obtaining professional advice about their own particular circumstances.

Good point, Sushdmehta!

On £2.5k per month, you could live almost anywhere.

Tunbridge Wells is a lot pricier than Margate.

Not familiar with those areas but obviously much depends on type of accomodation and location.

For example, do you need to be able to use public transport daily? or just be on the outskirts of a city and takethe train in to the city once or twice a week? If you stay home a lot will you accept being in a place that is safe by day but not so safe at night? Or live in a city with high unemployment (which keeps rents low and is not as issue since you won't be working)

No industrial areas where unemployment is high (crime) or big cities. I will buy a car for travel. I just need a place to call "home base" for a year from where we can explore the country. I enjoy fishing, so a fishing village would be cool. Thanks
