Claiming benefits student disregard

Post by dixey » Sun Jul 31, 2011 12:09 am

Hi
My ILR is due in Sept 2011. I have a small query

I spent my 2 years in Leicester living in a massionaitte and occupying a room in it and paying the rent to landlord. The contract says that the landlord bears all the charges like council tax, gas, electricity etc and except those which i have agreed to pay myself.

I didn't received any council tax during these two years. But when i relocated to another place i informed the council of my change and situation. Few weeks later i received an email from my previous landlord asking me if i was staying as a student or a full time worker in that room. i think I clearly mentioned at the time of signing contract and/or filling of reference form that i was a full time worker.

After few months i received a bill for only two months from my council and it stated a deduction of student disregard.

I am feeling fishy about it. Have i claimed any benefits unknowingly? Why the council only charged me for the couple of months only? What is this student disregards is all about. I have not filled any form to request for any housing benefit at all. What should i do.

First you have not claimed any benefits. You can't claim benefits unless you apply for them in the first place.

Can you tell if your landlord was living at the same address during that time? Or were you living with other tenants? Who else was living there during that time? I hope you still possess the copy of your old tenancy agreement.

Also you said after few months you received a bill from your local council. Is it for the previous address or for the one you are living now?
