Schengen Visa Or A Transit Visa

Post by karwan1 » Sat Aug 13, 2011 8:53 am

Good morning everyone,

I wonder if some one could clarify this to me, I am planing to go abroad to a non-EU country , however, there is no direct flight between the UK and that non-EU country, so for me to use a flight trip I have to change in one of the EU countries within the same trip, and the most practical one for me at this stage is to use Austrian Airline going through Vienna, now as I am from middle east I guess I will need a Schengen Visa for this trip, could some one tell me roughly how long it would takes if I apply for Schengen Visa from the Austrian Embassy to be issued in to my passport that has been endorsed with ILR from the UK?
My other question is that the main reason for my trip is to bring my wife over her in to the UK, our spouse vis has been approved recently, I would like to be with her during the trip personally, my question would be: does my wife needs a Schengen Visa if we are going to use the Austrian Airline going through Vienna to enter the UK, as her passport only have UK spouse/marriage visa only, I heard about what is called Transit Visa, but not sure would does this really exactly....is it better if I use this transit visa for my whole trip (going and coming) instead of apply for Schengen Visa? your comment would be appreciated. Thanks.

If you are in transit you don't need a visa as you are not leaving the airport. You will need the visa if you leave the airport even for a few hours. It might be worth checking with the airline or embassy .

What nationality do you hold? Some countries require you to apply for a Schengen transit visa, even if you are not leaving the airport, depending on your nationality.

I also heard from other that I would not need a visa as I am not leaving the airport...it is the same trip with same airlines...it is only changing the plane and I would be in the airport for 1-2 hours only...I though may be same have similar experience in this matter, anyway, will call the embassy before i buy the ticket.

I am from Iraq....I have not heard that any nationality would need schengen visa for using an airport...it just does not make sense to me.
