Registering my Imported Car

Post by Sylvester » Tue Mar 11, 2014 3:26 pm

Hi everyone first of all I am new to the Forum, so thanks to anyone in advance who can offer advice. I hope that a few years down the line I may be in a position to offer advice to others in my current position.

I am moving to Ireland from the UK in a few weeks and I am struggling a bit with the process to register my car.

I have learned so far that as I have owned the car for more than 12 months I can get a VRT Exemption Letter from Revenue.
I need this letter when I take the car for the VRT Inspection otherwise I will have to pay the VRT.
Once the VRT Inspection is complete I will then have to do the NCT as the car is older than 4 years.
Once the above is complete I should have my new registration document and number plates.

So you may be asking what is the problem? Well I am struggling with the timeframes required.
According to the NCT Website I must have the VRT within the 7 days of the vehicle arriving in the State. So after checking the Revenue Website on how to obtain the VRT Exemption Letter is explains this may take 7 days. Further in order to get the VRT Inspection done I need a PPS Number, which also takes 7 days.

Can anybody advise if I am reading this all wrong? I am concerned that if I do not complete the VRT Inspection within the 7 days what will happen?

Thanks again for any advice
