Toefl scores as language proof

Post by pktamil2007 » Tue Jul 24, 2007 10:56 am

Hi All,

I read somewhere that Toeffl score is accepted as Language proof. I was

wondering that is there any specific time period during which the toeffl

should have been taken? For instance, I gave my toefl in october 2002 and

toefl scores are valid for 2 years. So is it that HO requires the latest

toefl or the previous ones can be accepted?

Only a VALID TOEFL/IELTS score is acceptable

Only a VALID score is acceptable. I have applied with a TOEFL score. Will update you once I have a decision. Till now I have been able to find just one candidate (in the forum) who applied with TOEFL, and the decision was positive.

Since your score is not valid any more. IELTS would be advisable. Why take the undue risk?

Be specific as where you read this. Is it a website/forum/news article?

So is it that HO requires the latest toefl or the previous ones can be accepted?

I doubt that ToEFLL wont be accepted, since IELTS is the alternate scoring area to prove the english languange efficiency & not Toefl.

Still if you have your point valid..post the material where you got the info from?

Cheers

Here's the link:

The ETS (TOEFL authorities) claim on their website that HO accepts TOEFL as an alternative evidence. HSMP guideline mentions that alternative english test (equivalent to IELTS 6) CAN (not WILL) be acceptable. But they may still force the candidate to write IELTS.

I have directly communicated with ETS-Europe and they reassured that I may apply with TOEFL and HO will consider it. But Home Office folks refused to comment on it. Neither did they deny it nor acknowledge it. Just a diplomatic answer "We will refer it to NARIC and if the result is positive we will accep it".

I tried to verify it with NARIC and they said "We deal in qualifications. We do not have any authority to comments on tests/certifications."

After all IELTS is governed by Cambridge (a British organization) and TOEFL is governed by ETS (An american organization).

Hence if you have a VALID TOEFL score, wait for my decision. Else write IELTS. Anyways IELTS is a cake walk. If its not then don't bother going to the UK.

!!!Don't take chances, its your hard earned money!!!

@cdraina,

I would say that home office are not like we predict. I am sure with my experiences with them, getting an HSMP approval is not so easy unless you give them an evidence which is as simple as 2+2 = 4. So Dont say or argue or cry or shout or plead or explain them that 1+2+1 is also 4 .

If you want to venture hsmp with new techniques i would say , you will have real fun ahead. :)

Cheers

Totally agree with you ikon!

That's what I tried to convey in my post.

Unfortunately, I learnt it the hard way :(

That's always a competition between those two exams and the certificate programs for teaching English as a Foreign Language, one sponsored by a UK and the other by an American one
It seems like politically the HO is not going to endorse the American version. My gut reaction is that they probably will accept TOEFL. Remember TOEFL is used as prequisite for entry to many American programs as it is taught in English so it would be a bit hypocritical for the HO to not accept TOEFL but accept programs who use TOEFL as a prerequisit. However as previously mentionned is it worth the risk? Maybe take the life in the UK test to CYA and be done with it.

Hi all,

Thank you very much for your valuable response.

Cdraina,
Please let me know of your decision.

However I shall either give IELTS or arrange the language letter from my university. I hope the letter from university should be accepted by them if all the details are mentioned.

IELTS tests English Reading,Writing, listening and speaking; while TOEFL tests Reading,Writing, listening but NOT speaking ( if sth has not changed recently).

I took IELTS(score 7.5) general for HSMP though i had valid TOEFL score of 247/300 CBT.

that is my conlcusion after NO good responses from NARIC,ETS etc
